Is It Bad to Read Scripture on My Phone? - Jay Kim (Ep 41.4)
Thursday Mar 26, 2020
Thursday Mar 26, 2020
Step 2 in creating a lifestyle of discipleship involves practicing the basics, like reading the Bible. Throughout Church history, this meant listening to a person in front of us read or recite Scripture or reading a physical printed copy of the text ourselves. The digital age has changed that though. It's given us the opportunity to consume more information at a faster rate than ever before. So it's worth taking the time to evaluate how our reading of Scripture has been affected by these changes in technology. If we're called to have analog relationships in community and to worship in an analog way, how can we read Scripture in a way that fosters those analog relationships and produces transformation rather than just a transfer of information? In this chapter, Jay unpacks the value of a slower and more intentional approach to our reading of Scripture. In an age of twitter-sized bites of information, it's important to take time to read a longer work like the Bible not just for information but for transformation.

Can a Digital Church Create an Analog Community? - Jay Kim (Ep 41.3)
Wednesday Mar 25, 2020
Wednesday Mar 25, 2020
Why do you go to church? Are looking for something specific like a deeper life in Christ or a good environment for your kids? As difficult as it might be to hear, both of these reasons are rooted in a consumeristic mindset. The focus is on what the church can do for you. Or maybe you haven’t given it much thought at all. Perhaps going to church is simply engrained into your cultural identity and it has become part of your normal rhythm of life. Both of these approaches miss out on the purpose of gathering together as the Body of Christ. That’s why Jay Kim explains in this chapter, why we need to be intentional about creating analog community. This approach to church challenges us to be active participants in the community rather than passive partakers.

Can Churches Worship Online? - Jay Kim (Ep 41.2)
Tuesday Mar 24, 2020
Tuesday Mar 24, 2020
Worship is a response to the goodness of God in our lives. We can express that response in times when we're alone. But there's something about the gathering together of people that can't be replaced with a digital experience. The problem comes from our tendency to treat worship as something meant to make us feel good. If we view worship as something for us, listening to or watching a worship service digitally becomes just as good as worshiping together. But could it be that true worship is something each of us are called to create and participate in rather than something we consume? In this chapter, Jay gets to the heart of what worship is and the reason we were made to be disciples worshiping together side by side.

Monday Mar 23, 2020
Monday Mar 23, 2020
We live in a culture that is largely driven by technological development. The digital age is here, and it has brought us unprecedented access to information and to people. The values that drive this culture are speed, choices, and individualism. We want what we want now and in our own way. And for the most part, many of the technological breakthroughs we enjoy are great. Social media allows us to connect with friends and families across the world. The internet and podcasting platforms have allowed us to bring education and opportunities to learn to those who otherwise wouldn’t have the chance. But have we stoped to ask if all this technology is benefiting the church? Have we let the values of the digital age erode the Mission and values of the Church? Is our technology keeping us from connecting with others and doing the deep work that is required for discipleship? This is why we wanted to Jay Kim about his new book, Analog Church.

Coaching relationships or, more generally, walking with someone is a vital part of a discipleship lifestyle. While Journey Pastoral Coaching is for ministers, the need for someone else to walk beside us in the Christian life is nonetheless real. We won't function at our best without these relationships. In this chapter, Josh and Chris talk about the way coaching and their relationship with each other has saved their lives and put them on a path to a lifestyle of discipleship.

Developing a Coaching Attitude - Alan Baker (Ep 40.4)
Thursday Mar 12, 2020
Thursday Mar 12, 2020
Following Jesus is a way of life. It’s not something we take break from. Whether you are busy at work trying to make a deadline, going to a sporting event with your family, or taking a break by going on vacation. These aren’t events that happen in addition to our walk with Christ. They happen in the midst of our life in Christ, and often they happen because of it. So we must always be ready to listen to the voice of the Spirit when He presents an opportunity to serve. In this chapter, Pastor Baker shows us what this mindset looks like through a willingness to be have a simple conversation. Because when you cultivate a mindset and a lifestyle that flows from the person God has called you to be, walking with Him becomes part of who you are. And that’s when Being leads to Doing.

Why You Need a Horizontal Coaching Relationship - Alan Baker (Ep 40.3)
Wednesday Mar 11, 2020
Wednesday Mar 11, 2020
Journey Pastoral Coaching's horizontal beam in the cross approach to coaching represents a relationship with a peer. It's an intentional coaching relationship with someone who's walking alongside you, often at the same stage of life you are. A good coach doesn't need to know all the answers, they only need to be willing to walk beside you and ask the right questions. This means your peers can make great coaches. And they have a different perspective than someone in a vertical coaching relationship would have. Both of these provide valuable help as you pursue a lifestyle of discipleship. In this chapter, Alan Baker walks us through the value of the peer coaching relationship and some of the ways Journey Pastoral Coaching has implemented this vital coaching relationship.

Why You Need a Vertical Coaching Relationship - Alan Baker (Ep 40.2)
Tuesday Mar 10, 2020
Tuesday Mar 10, 2020
When it comes to Journey Pastoral Coaching there are two beams that signify the different types of coaching relationships. There is the vertical beam that signifies the relationship we have with the a coach who is more experienced than us and who has already done what we are now trying to do. Then there is the horizontal beam that signifies the relationship that we have with others who are at the same level as us. They are struggling to learn and accomplish the same things we are. And these two types of relationships each offer unique value. One is not more important than the other. We need both to help us fully develop as followers of Christ. But in this chapter, we discuss the value of the vertical beam and explore how these relationships provide a unique perspective that can only be gained through years of experience.

Why Disciples Need Coaches - Alan Baker (Ep 40.1)
Monday Mar 09, 2020
Monday Mar 09, 2020
One of the greatest temptations we face is the desire to be more than we were created to be. It's the desire to be as great as God. And for many of us, that even happens in the way we try to live as followers of Jesus. It could be that we think we have to grow and develop our way, under our own power, and by our own abilities. It's an isolating experience. But thinking we're alone or that we have to somehow figure out how to live as disciples by ourselves misses the very thing God created us for in the first place. He made us for relationships. In short, if we're going to be serious about creating a lifestyle of discipleship, we have to be serious about walking with others in that lifestyle. In this chapter, our personal friend and pastoral coach, Alan Baker, talks with us about value of relationships and why we often miss or ignore this important part of our discipleship.
